Hi,

I have a 1993 v6 Mercury o/b 175 HP, Carb... It has a ARCO trim motor that burned up on me...

History: This is the 2nd problem I've ever had with this motor in 10 years, the 1st was High voltage 2 years ago, I replaced both Voltage Regulator which solved that problem.

Back ground: We used the boat for 4 days in a row prior, no issues!(24-30 hrs) Trim/Trailer working fine.. I backed it into the drive way, lowered motor, unloaded and cleaned it up and left it alone...

Problem: On the 5th day, late afternoon getting ready to take it out, I found the motor was all the way up and I alway leave it down to drain the water out... I am 99% sure it was down! I pressed the down button on the side of the motor and I just clicked (solenoids)... I put the charger on the battery, that checked ok, and the motor would turn over so it was at full charge. I pressed down from the trim at the helm and still the same result... My guess was the trim or trim motor at that point...

I took it apart to find out that the trim motor was fried!! Like the up button was stuck on some how??.. I have replaced the trim motor, but I'm afraid of what may have cause the problem, and that it might do it again???

I have checked both switches, and they seem fine, they both spring back to center position and they don't stick at all.. Checked with a multi meter too...

With the new trim motor installed, the switches and solenoids seem to be working as they should (tested, 5 hrs of sking) no issues, no hickups...

I plan to buy a battery switch, right now, I am just pulling the + battery cable... The motor cost too much to chance it!!!

My gut on this is: 1. the up solenoide engaged with the sun beating down on it. or 2. someone held the button too long and burned it up.. (I have a retarted boy who visits next door, and has been caught playing in my boat before, so..

Normally the boat is kept locked in the garage, so it out of reach of the sun and the boy next door, but while on vacation, I was leaving it out cause we were using it everyday...

Any one eles had a problem before??

As a precaution, should I replace the Up solenoid?

Go with the battery switch. It's cheap insurance that will protect more than just the trim and tilt pump. An automotive one worked fine for me.
