Trim/Tilt Not working

Hello everyone. I have done a search on this topic and could not find an answer or similar problem. My friend has a 2001 70hp Yamaha and the power trim/tilt quit working. Two weeks ago we did our regular check list before leaving the hosue for a day of fishing. When I lifted the engine it started out slow and weak but started to work fine after that. Last week when I went to check it before leaving the house the motor did not tilt. All I kept getting was a knocking/clicking sound from the trim/tilt motor. I've been told by a local marina that it is very rare to see the trim/tilt motor go bad in 5 years. He said most of the time it's just an electrical problem such as corrosion on the inside or a bad relay. Is there any truth in what he is telling me ? This boat is used in saltwater. Thanks in advance for any information.

A lot of truth in what he is saying. To start trouble shooting, disconnect the blue and green wires running from the relay to the trim motor. Jumper direct from a battery postive to the blue and negative to the green. You can reverse the leads to test the down. If all works fine then check the relay and connections.

Thanks Ray. I wasn't to sure about what he had said and no one else I talked to had mentioned anything about that. Going to check it out this morning

Re: Trim/Tilt Not working

I have same problem on a 1986 90hp. before I blow something up I want to verify wiring. Three wires, green, Blue, and a black wire. You're saying put Blue to neg. on battery and green to pos. on battery. Switch to change direction. Do I remove blue and green wire from the terminals first?
Also there seems to be two relays, is that correct?
Do nothing with black wire black?
Thanks

The older model is wire different. One wire (negative to ground is black) and one (postive to the blue for up or the green for down)

Re: Trim/Tilt Not working

Thanks for reply, I am a bit confused in understanding how the trim motor works. I have the two relays, blue to one, green to second, black to ground on both. If I take a voltmeter and push up button I get a positive voltage on both green and blue wires, same with down button. Is that right? I guess I am thinking of your standard motor where your just reverse the two wires. But this cant be. I have this feeling it is the trim motor that is bad but I would like to confirm before.

you can also pull the relays out and jump it there. that is how i found out if the motor worked. get ya a short piece of 14 gauge wire..should do the trick

No that is not right bolted4. Test the motor first and then find out about the trim wiring. You may have a shorted trim switch in the system. Often the problem where add on switches have been used or older units from corrosion.

Re: Trim/Tilt Not working

Ok thanks, I took the wires off and the relays work corrrectly, so the motor must be shorted (all wireing is origonal). I tried putting positive to blue and green separately but nothing happens.

Here is next question. I want to replace trim motor. I have boat motor half way up. (were it died finally) The manual over ride screw is "froze" in so I can lift motor farther to access trim motor. How can I lift motor farther without causing more issues?

Thanks again guys for your help in finding a place to sink more money in my boat!

Re: Trim/Tilt Not working

Lifting it higher won't help. at least one clamp bracket will have to come off to get to the motor bolt on one corner.
