Hello Again,

As mentioned before I am very new to the world of outboard motors and I have a question regards to the tilt operation. I recently bought a 1996 4hp Johnson Seahorse FORW/NEU. I have yet to put it on a boat yet because I haven't found one yet. I have secured it on a piece of wood for now and I notice that when the motor is in the down position it does not lock. Is this the way it is supposed to be for ease of pulling the motor up when docking or approaching shallow water, or is something broken. From my point of view wouldn't the motor come out of the water when moving foward? Sorry if this is a stupid question but it's bugging me.

Thanks

Jackpine

Not sure if it should lock or not, but moving forward the motor will not kick up as the prop is pushing and holding it down in the water. But it will kick up if you put it in reverse with a little throttle. But I see you have no reverse, so a mute point.

jackpine there should be a lever by the engine where you secure it to the transom, this will either lock or unlock. you want the engine to be unlocked in most cases, to prevent damage to lower unit or transom should you hit some sobmerged object.
