Trim & tilt question

I have an old 71 merc 135hp. Recently the power tilt has slowed and now barely moves. It has always bled down but now it sounds like the motor might be shot? Or is there something I'm missing to get the power back up. It still lifts up but it takes a real long time. Could it be a fluid problem? I'm not even sure where to put the stuff in. thanks for any help

Re: Trim & tilt question

one more question. If the tilt fails completely how can I lift the motor manually(gasp!)?

That motor should have a knurled knob on the PTT pump, on the bottom, on the control valve. Turn it CW to allow manual tilting. Don't expect the motor to tilt easy however.

could it be a fluid problem? there's nothiing leaking. whre does the fluid go? or could it be something else? i'd sure miss it if stopped working. Also, if I move that knob counter cw, will it help keep it in position? thanks for any help

Re: Trim & tilt question

As chris said, find that knurled knob and turn it CW to enable manual lifting of the motor...if you leave the knob in this position the motor will raise when you put it in reverse gear...so only turn the knob CW if you want to manually lift the motor, then return the knob to the full CCW position for proper operation...The symptom you describe sounds like the armature is siezing inside the field and frame and has finally taken its toll on the armature...
