trim tilt unit malfunction

i have a mid nineties Johnson 130hp outboard, I determined the trim motor to be bad so I replaced it. I now have a working motor but I cant get it to trim up or down. It is full of fluid, the manual release valve on the side does open and close ( makes gurgling sound when doing so ). I would have by now already replaced the entire unit IF i could remove the pin holding the unit to the transom bracket, but since I cant, Im asking for help here. Am I air bound? whats the remedy for that? Is the unit just bad?

Are you sure the motor is spinning the pump? Seems to.me there was a little key type thing that went between the motor and pump. If that not in there it won't pump.

That thought had crossed my mind, but im pretty sure i got that drive key in the slot. Im not sure the motor would bolt down flush if i didnt get that lined up properly?

Is thus a salty dog? Maybe your manual release valve is not closing all the way or the O-rings on it are bad.

it is indeed a salty dog. Are you saying if the o rings are bad or the valve is not closing this will stop the hydraulics from working ?

Is there a replacement part for this ? a new valve/screw assembly or an o ring kit available that you are aware of ?

I just don't know that you will be able to get snap ring pliers in to remove the snap ring that hold the valve in unless you can separate the clamps. Sounds like the pin being stuck is gonna get ya.

It looks very doable on my 90HP with the right pliers Jake.

I just can't remember. Been awhile. I suggest he looks before you buy a.part you may not be able to return was all I meant.

I certainly hope he can.do it.

problem as it turns out is this, the pin is so frozen the unit cannot pivot on it, so it is unable to move up or down, and because it wont go up or down the air cannot be purged from the system, i have condemned the unit and will replace it

A 50/50 mix of acetone and tranny fluid may be your friend when trying to free stuck stuff. Better than any penetrating oil sold. In my humble opinion only.

Gee,on that motor, you will need to drive out the bottom PTT mounting pin, or split the transom clamps to get it off. In either case, if successful, the unit will then pivot. It the top pin is frozen, you have to drive it out to replace the PTT unit.

You will find that a ACY/OXY torch, a big brass drift and a BFH will get this apart. Been there.

It strikes me that even if the top & bottom pins were both frozen solid it would still move up & down a small amount.
Frozen solid in the tilt tube would be a more likely candidate or the safety latch not disengaged.
It must be up so where are the trim rams, in or out?

Put it this way I think your problem is something else other than a frozen bottom pin.

Try opening the manual release valve & lifting it up & down by hand.

Any history on it, like it used to work & now it doesn't or is it a new purchase?

If you're on the safety latches or the tilt tube is sticky hitting down will retract the tilt rams first then if you hit up the thing may not move until the trim rams extend.
