No, it is not pointless. It is actually the pump. How does it work? That one I am not sure since I have never disassembled one but I am sure that eventually RRitt will tell you.

Re: trim/tilt ????

leave the pump alone. put back onto manifold with new orings (size 008?). make sure to put back spring and acetal ball. if you have lost spring and acetal ball then you'll never find replacements and may as well start looking for a pump + motor. Need picture of the manifold showing how many hoses and pattern of holes. Some pumps are all four holes on side. Some are fed through an adapter bracket. and some have the holes coming directly out of bottom. If you have lost your spring and acetal ball then you will need replacement with exact same ports pattern. I may or may not have on shelf somewhere. Better yet, you were a careful mechanic and did not lose your parts.

Re: trim/tilt ????

motor is no issue. use the $109 mercury mariner force motor off ebay. your big problem is getting the pump back together. I can't believe you split it. How many times can I type "do not take apart gear plate" in these forums and people still do it?

now you have to replace everything. take manifold and pump to a hydraulics shop and ask them if they can put it together with all new orings and ball bearings throughout.

Re: trim/tilt ????

you will need to use whole system. oil tubes are different and your old tubes won't line up.
