I have a 1981 115 Evinrude. The tilt and trim are operating ok but when I am lifting the motor there is a loud grating/ratchet type sound coming from the general area of the hydraulic ram.Any ideas of what this may be , and how it can be repaired . Cheers Bruce

Re: Trim/Tilt

Usually that's due to the hinge area at the steering arm being too tight due to salt corrosion, rust, whatever.

Loosen one of the large side bolts temporarily, remove the two grease fittings and make sure grease flows through them, clean out any possible hard caked debris that may exist in the grease area.

After the above, reinstall the grease fittings, then force grease through those areas. Hopefully that cures your problem.

If it doesn't, and you find that the noise is actually coming from the PTT unit itself, that's going to demand some dismantling of the unit.
