Re: Trim wiring help

This may not help, but is my experience. I am runing a 1980 70hp, in replacing a 3 wire system 6 years ago because I could not repair the 3 wire motor effectively, bad inside terminal wiring & my fingers were not skinny enough. I swapped a complete used 115 hp transom mount which used a 2 wire motor. Last year that motor died. I purchased a new 2 wire motor from our hosts.

Now at the same time I converted from a remote steering to tiller, so added a new style up/down switch. I could not figure out the wiring as I assumed there had to be a separate ground wire.

What I found was for the 2 wire motors, the ground appears to be thru the transom mount & the control box selionids flop continenuity. As for UP, one wire acts as ground, then for DOWN these are reversed & the other wire is ground. Changing the rotation of the motor.

I however did not have to change anything in the selinoid box.

Thanks machinist i can see how that would work if your transom was not wood.I can not under stand how one wire gets its ground ether up are down position. If the motor is to be grounded thats easy.I was thinking that a relay are a solenoid swap one wire from 12 volt to ground but i do not know. Thanks

Re: Trim wiring help

With a 2 wire system you will need the relays and the box they set in and the proper wiring. The old 3 wire system had the solenoid in it for up only. The down system didn't need it as there was less current draw going down. On the three wire system the current for either up or down ran to one field coil in the mtr at a time. This reversed the mtr. The 2 wire doesn't have any field coils in them and only magnets for field coils. That's the reason you can reverse them by reversing polarity. Put your battery in backwards in your newer boat and that's the reason the starter will run backwards and won't engage the flywheel.
