I'm a newbie to this. I purchased a boat it has a 140 merc in board engine About a 1987 and the problem is that the stern goes up but not down, you have to stand on it and it slowly goes down. The pump has been out and cleaned, and even replaced it with a used pump and does the same thing. The pump sounds like it turns but nothing happens. Do both cylinders work at the same time or is one for up and one for down? Not sure what to look at ? Thanks for your help.

Salt water? The cylinders get corroded inside. They have alot of push but not pull. Does it happen on trailer or all the time? Jeff

Salt water gets passed the scaper (#16) and starts corroding the end cap (#21). As the end cap corrodes it 'swells' and grabs the piston rod. The pump produces 3000psi up pressure, but only around 1500psi down pressure. Standing on the unit assists the down pressure of the pump.

You could take the ram apart and clean the end cap, but it'll happen pretty quickly again. Best to replace the cap. Check the piston rod for dents or scratches, these carry salt water past the scraper seal and into the inside of the end cap, accelerating the corrosion process.

Chris............
