I am not able to trim my motor very much without the handling of the boat getting bad!! I checked it today and as far as I can tell I'm not trimming up but about 3 inches from all the way down !( the gauge doesn't work) Is this right or do I need to change something?? If so what?? Thanks!!

Define "Bad", What type of boat and lenth of boat, what engine, what prop, what are the RPMs at WOT, do you have a hydofoil on the engine, etc.

Re: Trimming up!!

Steering gets real tight, it feels less stable and the rpms go up with out gaining any speed!! It Feels good and runs good just trimming up that little but I'm kinda new to this and I'm not sure about the whole thing!! I need to get the trim gauge working but to fix that I need both senders witch cost out the @$$ for this motor! So I'm just trying to get a feel from other people on what I should trim at!! Right now I'm happy with just trimming out like I am now, just don't know if it's right

Re: Trimming up!!

smokey, that sounds normal... When trimming up and gaining speed, there is more force on the moter skeg, but also less bite. So it gets a little tight.

BUT let me tell you to be careful when trimming out beyond what you are used to... Don't let me scare you though, if your setup is correct you should have no problem trimming up until you get a good rooster tail... But pick a nice calm day to test so you don't run into a lot of heavy chop.... You'll gain more speed the more you trim up and it will be a pretty smooth ride "if" everything is set-up properly. But turning corners is not meant to be done at "bat out of hell" speeds... Test on a pretty straight line.

I just went through this myself. And I'm happy to say that everything is set up good after a few adjustments. But if you run into a "chinewalking" condition (which is a wiggle of the boat) that's scary sH@@. You may need to raise the motor up some.
Let us know..

Re: Trimming up!!

I went up a hole on the motor and tested today !! It drove like a caddie but like you said the rpms went up and speed went down! Until I can go up on the prop I'm pretty happy with it!! Here's was I got, About 55 mph at about 5800 rpms and smooth as she can be like driving down the freeway at 80!! But I may have caused another problem!! I lost my brain for a w a while today when I loaded the boat up, I pulled up the ramp and felt this bump bump bump, well I thought maybe I have a flat on the trailer!! Not so luckly, I forgot to let the motor up and that little leg on the bottom of the motor or whatever you call it, drug all the way up the ramp and it skuffed it pretty bad knocking a small few chips out of it!! How Bad is it and how do I fix it?? Thanks

I can't tell you until you show us a pic of it....

But, If the skeg is still intact, basically all of it still there, It's probably not a problem....

How far did you trim out???? When testing....

I trimmed about the same as before maybe just just a littlr more!! As far as I can tell it's not to bad on the skeg! I think maybe I can dress it up with a die grinder!!

Re: Trimming up!!

If you only chipped the skag and it is not bent then clean it up with a file and you'll be fine. If you bent it to one side or the other it will affect the handling of the boat, pulling to one side and having to compensate with the steering.
If you need to replace it you can buy a stainless steal skag to slip over the old one, follow the instruction carefully and do not try and straighten out a bent skag as you may snap it off.
As for how far to trim. Does the boat have trim tabs as well or are you just using the motor?

Re: Trimming up!!

That sounds minor,,, Probably not bent anyway..... So as long as it's intact, you should be ok...

Once you get that taken care of, you need to do some careful testing... Trim out on calm water as far as you can (slowly)... Watch out for chinewalking, and watch you water pressure....
Good luck....
