MR tyoe ourtdrive with standard J117 trim pump

One of my outdrives goes up easily but won't lower unless I stand on it while lowering the drive. I checked the pump fluid and it is full. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ralph

Whats a standard j117 trim pump? If your having to stand on the out drive while trimming down my best advise is to hang on....real tight

The pump runs fine in both directions.

It's your standard older version Merc trim pump - I think the model is J117 - that the number I always see stamped on those kind of pumps

When I raise it it goes up just fine. When I try to lower it I hear the pump run fine but the drive does not move. If I have somebody stand on it while I lower it it will go down.

Is it pumping fluid into the bilge or outside the boat? check you lines. You could also have a ram that is siezed.

No leakage anywhere. Can the ram be seized in only one direction? How can I test for that problem?

Look carefully where the hyd. rams come out
of the trim cylinders. When the end caps,
that hold the oil seals and wipers, corrode
it will bind rams.
In first stages of problem, rams go out but
not in. More pressure is used to push outdrive
up - than down.
Next step is oil in the water and water in the
trim pump. After a while you will see seals
and wipers hanging on rams.
If this is what you see - end cap repair kits
are about $50 each at any ships store.

Re: Trin will raise but not lower

Most likely cause is a bad bushing. So I tried to remove the end cap and could not get it to budge! Shoot! I sprayed the heck out of it with liquid wrench still nothing!

Now I'm thinking I need to cut the outer case off, buy the replacement case, bushing and orings and rebuild it or just buy a used cylinder. So, today after leaving it soaked in liquid wrench, it works fine!

I am going to try to remove the end cap again later today and will post results.

Here is a good link for replacement parts:
Replacement parts

I had exactly teh same problem on my MR drive. I rebuilt both rams with new seals. Turns out the seal at the rear end on one was leaking.
