Hi,

I am looking for a "google-maps" sort of trip mapping site that will allow one to pick a route with minimal altitude change.

For example say....a trip from Los Angeles to Denver. I would like to be given choices in route that would minimize altitiude changes; as opposed to the most direct route or one that would avoid toll roads, etc...

Anyone know of such a site?

For those of us who pull trailers, and those of us who are sensitive to higher altitudes for health reasons would find such information helpful.

Never heard of such of thing.

You could manually map a route, but you would probably not gain much.

For instance, LA to Denver, you will have to cross the Rocky Mountains, somewhere, unless you wanted to circle around via Mexico.

There always seem to be a mountain range right in the way, somewhere.

Google Earth shows altitude as you mouse over a spot. That's about the only thing I can think of. Using the LA to Denver, to matter what road you take to get there, you'll still have gone from +/-50' above sea level to +/- 1 mile above sea level, even if you go down through Mexico to avoid the Rockies (which I believe Denver sits on the edge of).

yeah; I guess the LA to Denver scenario wasn't a very good example. But; there are many trips that have various options...some going over more and higher mountain passes opposed to other routes that might be longer but would involve less hill-climbing.

The bicycling sites and hiking sites have the sort of thing that I am looking for. They usually present it as a graph...with miles traveled along the bottom...with a graph-line showing the altitude change over the route.

There's gotta be something out there...or we should get together and build one !
