I am looking for an eletric trolling motor for my boat. It is an 18 foot open bow, weighing in at 2k lbs.

What lbs of thrust would you reccomend, or is there a place that has a trolling motor selector program?

Just looking to go 2-3 mph, and be able to do so in chop/wind.

Re: Trolling help

The absolute biggest you can afford and power. Larger motors usually require 24 volts (second battery) but more power is the key.

Depends on boat weight, shape and design. Wind/chop are a horrible enemies to troll in.

Im thinking of going gas. I hate the idea of the noise, but im sure a 2.5 hp gas engine is way more powerful then the best electric.

I know their are tons of factors in the equation, but is there a chart that approximates the conversion of thrust to hp ratio?

Re: Trolling help

Your boat to have forward motion against wind and chop you'll find yourself upset at the money you'll spend on an electric motor because it really won't do it...a gas outboard of 2.5 is plenty and on noise the new 4 stroke engines are SO quiet you don't even know their running...especially in wind and chop! You may be able to find a used one, but it would be a good investment and it will always be sellable atleast. Good luck and enjoy ~~/)~~
