I'm trying to educate myself on trolling equipment and the actual rigging proccess. My searches mostly turn up manufacturers and retailers but I first wish to understand the primary setup. (what goes where) Does anyone know of any on line resource that would be helpful to my understanding?

Thanks
Kevin

Re: Trolling Info?

First question that comes - what is the targeted fish species?
And what type of water? ocean, river lake?
And how deep are you fishing?

Trolling for walleye or northern in modest depth water can be done with your normal rod n reel.

Trolling for deep water trout or salmon, or on big water, and you will need a downrigger setup.

Then there is trolling behind a planer board, to get the lure out from behind the boat.

What are we talking about here?

Re: Trolling Info?

I would be trying to get down 50+ feet for lake trout, salmon, and perhaps even walleye. Also, believe the downrigger method would be a lot more friendly to my rod guides.

I've caught trout, stripers, and a few northerns already using the jet and dipsy diver alternative and believe this is an effective method to go between 10 - 30 ft down. But found out the hard way you can ruin a good rod when trying to go deeper.

I would also like to expand on my understanding of the planer board setup. Are they an alternative to outriggers or are they also used with outriggers?

Re: Trolling Info?

PAkev, I run 3 planer boards per side and 2 out the back. I set the farthest at around 50ft out, next at 30 and the closest at 10-15ft.
Excellent walleye tactic.
If you use heavy or hard pulling cranks, there are different boards available for easy to hard-pulling baits.
I have a tree of 3 rod-holders on each side at the rear for the boards.
This is killer on stripers near the surface too.

Re: Trolling Info?

I've only used downriggers a couple times, 25 years ago, don't remember how they were rigged.

Planerboards: Here is an explanation from in-fisherman. Makes more sense than the way I was going to write it. Planer boards work like a dipsy diver, except the run to the sides of the boat, not down. Run your lure behind the boat at a slow trolling speed until it reaches the desired distance, then engage the reel. Clamp the planer to the line, selecting a left or right model depending on which side of the boat you want to run your line. Lower the planer into the water with the rod and disengage the reel. A slow trolling speed creates enough drag to pull line off the reel and angle the planer off to the side of the boat. Once the planer reaches the desired distance, engage the reel and set the rod in a rod holder.

You can use a planer board AND a dipsy diver.
Here is a webpage that shows the setup.

http://www.bigjon.com/tips/tips.asp?ContentID=4
