I have an Evinrude trolling motor on a boat that I recently purchased. I am try to figure out if the motor is a 12v or 24v. There are two batteries hooked up in series running to the female receptical which is round with four slots, one of which is L shaped. There are two wires on the male plug. I don't know if the motor in 24v and the previous owner hookd it up wrong or if the motor is 12v. If it is 12v, wouldn't you only need one battery?

Again -- details, details, details. Model & serial number of the motor is needed. Your description is meaningless since both 12 volt and 24 volt motors will have a two terminal plug on the motor harness. Only combination 12 & 24 volt motors have more than two wires. But yes, a 12 volt motor needs one battery but very often two are used in "parallel" for extended run time. But then lots of folks confuse "parallel" and "series" wiring so you need to make sure exactly what you have. If the motor is 55# thrust or less, then it is very likely a 12 volt motor. If greater than 55# - 70# then it is 24 volt.

I may have been confused on paralleled vs. series. There is a red and a black from each battery running to the front. The model number is 773166. The serial number is 9302829. This is all the information I have. I see no other labels or markings on the trolling motor.

This motor is a 24v 74# thrust from info I found. Two batteries in series are required.
