There's one easy way to find out, wheather the motor has some sort of mercury switch or other safety i don't know, I can tell you that mine has no such safety and yes it could cause injury.

Some do have a safety switch but most do not. I preach to my Son In Law to turn the darned thing off or unplug it before stowing but my lectures fall on deaf ears. This is especially important with young, inquisitive kids crawling around in the boat and wondering -- "gee, what would happen if I press this button?" Get the picture?

That is one of the reasons that you should ALWAYS have a circuit breaker on the trolling motor battery(s).

Used to have a MotorGuide service center back in the 90's. Had a customer come in with the wires under the pedal melted & the armature cooked. Come to find out on his 2 hour trip to the lake, it had rained his cover became wet and heavy, and the draft behind the vechicle caused the tarp to push down upon the foot switch. Prop was jammed by the tarp, high current draw lots of heat. Could have been a real disaster, as in burnt boat. Kinda like the guys that throw a cigarette butt out the window lands in the boat then a few miles down the road....... nice flames at 60 - 70 mph!

The carpet on the deck of my budies G3 bass boat is chewed up from just that. FWIW, I always unplug my trolling motors when not in use.

Re: Trolling Motor Accident

Cataloged under "my worst fishing trip ever!", borrowed my father's boat and took two buddies fishing one night. Next morning, when I try to start the motor, low oil alarm comes on, and won't go off. Of course, even though there's plenty of oil, motor won't start.

I tell them, don't worry, we'll use the trolling motor. I cut the power switch on for the trolling motor, and as I'm opening the front gate on our pontoon boat, my friend decides to step on the peddle "that releases the trolling motor". As we all know, that peddle doesn't release the motor.

It sheared all three blades right off.

Our paddle, a stiff plastic model that had never been used in some 10 years on the boat, broke on the first stroke.

With the alarm still blaring, over the next two hours I paddled us back to the nearest ramp with a broom. It was years before I borrowed his boat again, though.
