Trolling Motor Bow vs Transom

I would like to upgrade my 28 lb Motorguide trolling motor with a gently used much higher lb unit. I have found several reasonably priced transom mount units. The complete bow mount units I have found are considerably more expensive. If I keep the original bow mount bracket, can any transom mount unit be mounted to the bracket? More specifically, can a Minnkota transom mount unit be mounted to a motroguide bow assembly?

Thanks

Yes and No... With a little fabrication, you may be able to pull it off... Who knows???

I did the opposite of what you propose... I attached a motorguide hand control motor to a minnkota bow mount assembly... Made a special sleeve out of an old piece of pipe to adapt to the shaft size difference... A little fileing and grinding, and it worked great...

The main problem is that Minn Kota uses a different shaft diameter the MotorGuide (I believe it's 1/8" difference with minnkota being larger)...

Thanks BJB.

That's good to know. I will keep that in mind.

I actually had not even thought of that. I was acutally thinking of the wiring considerations to make a hand controlled unit foot activated with a momentary on/off switch. I imagine you had to wire your unit up so if you care to comment on that, I would appreciate it.

Jeepers.. I did'nt have to change any wiring on the motor or the boat... All that I had to do was add a foot switch in the existing positive wire to the trolling motor...

If your wiring the boat up for the bow mount motor, use the heavist wire you can get... 10 gauge wire is usually sufficient for most small motors...

Check in the iboats megamall and search for "Seachoice Foot Control Switch Waterproof" ... That's what ya need... ;) A similar switch is usually available at wal-mart in the sporting goods dept. ..
