Does anyone know anything about putting a longer shaft on a trolling motor. Mine has a 36 inch shaft and I want to make a 42 inch. The wiring is no problem, but how do I get the shaft apart from the motor. As you can tell I am to cheap to buy a new 42 inch motor.

Re: trolling motor help

welcome to iboats!!!

i would think you would have better luck adding a piece in than getting that shaft out of the motor.......... it is composite right?

you may be able to find some tubing close enough to the same size to be able to just splice the extra 6" in........... all you need is a piece 1' long run it inside or outside which ever you can find that fits snug, then drill a hole through bothe pieces and bolt them together.

just an idea.

I think you are better off selling and buying what you need. Purchasing a longer shaft and the process to remove and replace it is probably costly and easy to damage things. The metal shafts I believe need heat to get them out. Composites is probably some form of epoxy, but don't know. Patching a tube to make it longer will have issues with sealing out water and passing the "new" section through the mount.

Well I found out how to do it, I used a heat gun to loosen up the sealant and turned it and backed out the shaft. And a new shaft is $28.00, it's still cheaper than a new motor.

cool, glad to see you got it out.... now i know it can be done i might have to make mine a little longer.

when you buy the new shaft does it come with adhesive/sealant?

if not what are you going to use?

was it composite or a metal shaft?
