I have to replace my old 12v Motor Guide trolling motor with a new one. Are the plugs that fit into the boat TM receptical all standardized? I was hoping to choose from among Motor Guide and MinnKota without having to change out the in-boat power receptical.

thats a good question. i thinking probably not, as 12 volt are 2 wire,, 24 and up are 3 wire. you can always make a 'pig tail' matching connections on each end, make sure it is wire correctly.

Your trolling motor will very likely come with a plug (not attached). There is a pretty good chance it will work. If not, replacing both the plug and receptacle is not a major operation.

I've never seen a new trolling motor with a plug attached. They have the standard round lugs for connecting to a battery. But you can buy just the plug to match your receptical.

It all depends on the make and model.
You can replace the outlet or the plug, or use an adaptor if needed.

This makes me think.....

I think my TM plug/outlet only has 2 wires, I'm not 100% but i'll have to check again.

If that is the case.. Should I be changing something? I have a 24v motor, it works fine,.

** Update ** Now that I think some more, My 80lb Minn Kota PowerDrive only has 2 wires anyway....

No -- if you have a two terminal plug on the motor and two terminal receptacle and both are physically compatible you don't need to change anything. The number of wires in a plug makes no difference as long as its compatible with the receptacle. You can use a two terminal, three terminal or even a four terminal plug -- it just means one or two terminals are not used. Obviously a two terminal plug won't work with a three terminal receptacle or vice versa. One or the other will need to be changed. If both are physically compatible, make sure the wiring to each is the same. That means make sure +24V is on the same pin as +24V on the motor plug. Same for ground. Red should measure +24V, black should be ground. Failure to make that check can be a problem.

Re: Trolling Motor Power Plug

Just re-read the entire string. You said your old motor was a 12V. Did you install a second battery and connect the two in series for the new 24V motor? If not, you have a wiring and a performance problem to correct.
