I am getting ready to buy a 10-14ft Jon Boat, which will weigh at MOST 400 lbs, usually way less. I'm wanting to buy a transom mount trolling motor as my primary motor. I'd like to be able to go faster than 5mph. What size (thrust) trolling motor should I look at buying? And what type/size of battery should I get? (I've been reading some other posts, so I know Deep Cycle is the way to go, other than that my knowledge is nothing.) Will I need some type of recharging unit on the boat? I would like to be able to stay on the water for 10-12 hours+ without recharging.

Thanks for any information you guys can provide!

Tony

I like the foot controled front mount. Better boat control in the wind. Any motor will work on a boat that small. Someone has a used one laying around. Not sure about 5 mph. No battery expert, but would get 2 for 10-12 hrs. I'm to old to stay out that long. Get an anchor and some oars.

If you plan to fish get a foot controlled motor or else you will spend more time guiding the boat than fishing. I just bought a new 14' Tracker riveted Jon and it weighs 135lbs..I use a 46lb thrust tiller/transom trolling motor and it moves the boat fine with two adults and gear all day long(I have a very large battery). Trolling motors props are not really designed to go over 5mph no mater what size motor you use. You will just have more power to fight the wind, which is the most important. Go with the biggest Deep Cycle battery you can find, and be aware that going full speed will significantly lower your run time. Also make sure you get a charger made to charge a deep cycle battery.
