Recently purchased a 1990 Starcraft SS160 with a 60HP Merc Main. Now I have to outfit the boat with a long shaft trolling motor.

Looking for anyone with insight as to what size do you think would be ideal.

This boat will primarily be used as a lake boat trolling for trout.

Friends have told me that 5 or 6hp would be sufficient but I see alot of talk about the 8 or 9.9 size.

Thanks for any help...

I'm not a northern troller, but a 16' boat is not all that big and unless you are going to fight tidal currents or face 50 knot winds (kidding) I'd opt for the smaller of your choices. I see a lot on here about people's trollers going too fast, never comments about going too slow; obviously not, that can be corrected by advancing the throttle.

Some even troll backing up which I think is a perilous maneuver due to possible sinking due to water over the transom; I think they even have a term for it "backtrolling" and I have seen boat ads describing how their boat does that very well.

My 2c, but HTH
