Wiring up a 24v system; aprx 20 ft frm motor to battery; using 6 awg wire as recomnd and because of the long run; want to use plug and socket connectors at front of boat; however the connectors i have found only have 8 awg wire on them. Is it safe to use these connectors seeing there is only 6 inches of 8 awg wire on both male and female end of plug? or should i stick to the 6 awg wire as recommnd? TM is rated at max draw of 56 amps; (Terrova 80 lb thrust)

Yeah that 8AWG will be fine on such a short piece. Keep in mind you will be losing (at full throttle) approximately .96v from your 40 total feet of #6.. and you will be losing about .05v with the chunk of #8 including some losses from the connector itself. This brings the total to approximately 1.1v . Rule of thumb is under 1v for best performance.

I would go ahead and use the connector and not worry about the VERY MINIMAL performance loss at full throttle.

Thanks for the response! Sounds like u no ur "stuff". I have gone ahead and got a connectpro marinco plug and socket w 6 awg adapter. got a real good deal on it. looks like it will be 6 awg directly to motor. As much as paid for motor...want to do it rite! looking fwd to using the Ipilot feature.

6awg plug, even better! Enjoy your new motor

Re: Trolling Motor Wiring ? 24v

Just rewired brand new Alumacraft for a 80# MK Foretrex. Boat came with 8awg. I replaced with 6awg as MK recommended, same Marinco plug and socket w/adapter, plus a MK 60A breaker. Worked out fine. Why would a boat mfg run #8 for a 24V setup? I also used just about 20'. I understand voltage drop between batteries and socket, but an interesting note, factory wire from MK foot pedal and plug in #8...

Mine's working out great, your's should to.

Actually when you go to higher voltage(24vs12) the amperage drops, so can use smaller wire and you size wire by the maximum amount of amps, not volts. The kind of wire also has a LOT to do with it, my pocket electrical engineering book, lists ratings of various #8 wires from 40 to 95 amps!
