I am looking to add a trolling motor to my Maxium 19'5 boat and I am not sure what hp to get.Would a 4hp be enough or should I get something with a little more just in case I have to use it sometime if my main motor goes out. Any suggestions would b great or if there is a guide I could look at.

Size of the kicker depends on how big the water is you are boating on. 4 HP will move the boat but not very quickly and maybe not at all into a stiff wind. 7.5 HP would be a better choice and not much bigger than a 4 HP.

Re: Trolling Motor

Hey 2012,
Just my two cents here, but if you enjoy fishing as much as I do, I recomend looking at a 65# thrust bow mount trolling motor. With a boat that size a bow mount alot easyer to run. The Minn kota is a solid unit and can be purchased with an internal GPS and wireless control. Yes it is more than you want to spend right now ($700 to $800) but your money isn't worth anything today and it will be worth even less tomarow. Amortize the difference in cost over five years and it is nothing!!!! The ability to float over a hot spot or troll the shore without the stink or noise of an outboard is priceless. Many a morning I have trolled the shore with a magnificent pair of Loones 15' off my bow. Or the one time I had a pair with a mother with five puff ball babies on her back, things. I will never forget. Good luck on your quest.

He's looking at a backup motor. If he is on big water an electric troller is not the motor have. If you can see shore from anywhere on the lake that's a different story.
