Trolling Speed Help

I am going to purchase a new 25HP outboard, 2 stroke, for my 14 foot aluminum boat. All the manufacturers will tell you how FAST they go..but not how far you can "troll down" meaning how slow they can go.

I need a motor which will reliably troll down to 1 - 1.5 MPH. Am considering a New Evinrude E-tec or a New Yamaha 25HP.

Please help me out here.

Thanks! :)

Re: Trolling Speed Help

I'd personally find a '57+ Johnnyrude and tune it. And save thousands. If you're set on a new motor, and low speed is your game, consider a 4 stroke. They are a bit heavier, but from what I've seen, they'll idle wicked slow. I have a '78 evinrude 25 that I tuned to go so slow that my rapala barely wobbles, and that's what the walleyes like on my lake in the fall. I've also worked on some older 25's that amaze me with the slow, steady idle that can be achieved. But if you don't mind spending the money, a 4 stroke yamaha 25 will make you very happy.

I have a 1972 18hp Evinrude and a 1957 35hp Lark and both will troll all day at 2mph. Great old motors and IMHO a lot more reliable and much easier to work on than the newer models.

Re: Trolling Speed Help

I really appreciate the input fellas. :) I am pretty much set on a new motor as I detest having to do any kind of work on them. I work 50 hrs a week and really don't want to play "whats wrong" when my motor is acting up (like now).

So will the E-tec troll down to 1 mph? can anyone tell me?

Thanks!

Re: Trolling Speed Help

And thanks a ton Chief.....I troll flies only (J. Fair's brand) and you have to get them down to about 1.2 to 1.7 mph for it to be effective.

2 mph is great for lures (I'm told), but wont cut it for flies.

You can add a trolling plate to any kicker and get it down almost no forward movement. They even make ones that react and open out of the way automatically for single motor use.
