I am replacing my Merc 40hp 4 stroke carb outboard , weight 204 lbs, 2.00:1 gear ratio with a 12" pitch prop to a new Merc 60 hp 4 stroke EFI outboard, weight 248 lbs, 1.83:1 gear ratio with a 12" prop.
I am concerned about slow trolling speeds .Assuming that the idling rpm's are the same on both motors ,while I automatically troll slower as a result of the new gear ratio ?
Recommended prop pitch is from 8" to 19".
The motor is on a 2001 Tracker V-16.

Re: trolling speed

With your old motor at 1000RPM, your prop will be turning 500RPM. With your new motor at 1000, your prop will be turning 546 RPM. So, all other things being equal, you should be trolling about 9% faster. Whether you actually will depends on too many things to predict correctly. It's fairly safe to say you won't be trolling any slower, though, since a prop with the same pitch is turning faster.

Re: trolling speed

Thanks,it's starting to make sense . I do desire to troll slower than I was before . What prop pitch would you advise and will I lose top speed compared to before?

Re: trolling speed

Scorpio
I would not recommend a lower pitch prop. Your prop pitch should be set so your wide open throttle RPM is in the reccommended RPM range. To slow down trolling speed you can tie a bucket on the back or install a trolling plate. This way still get the benefit from your added HP and do not need to worry about over reving motor with too low a pitch prop.
