Trouble accelerating

A 4.3 Mercruiser, 1990 boat. It bogs out when accelerating unless the choke blade is almost completely closed. I did get some dirt out of the fuel filter, yet still the same problem. Would rebuilding the carb help? I just thought once the engine was warm the choke should be open? Very frustrating, any ideas???

pull the carb, pull it apart.

you have crud in the accelerator pump circuit - the dirt that bypasses your filter as well as the cruddy fuel that evaporates and leave sludge behind.

so yes, a carb rebuild will help.

Okay, great. Do I need a carb rebuild kit specifically for that carb or can I get by with just carefully taking everything apart and cleaning well and putting back together with the old gaskets, etc.?

You might be able to get away with it, or you might be tearing it apart again.
