Trouble finding the correct lower shift cable

Thanks to all the great posts on this forum! As a new boat owner, I am finding volumes of knowledge to use as I work through the issues with my "new" boat.

Recently I purchased a modified "leaf collector". The previous owner had turned this 17 foot beauty into a living flower pot in his back yard for 5 years.

Officially it is a 1978 Century 180 runabout with an Mercruiser 165 I/O sterndrive (serial number below).

After some basic tuneup on the engine, I realized that the drive would not shift into reverse and all shifting was terribly difficult.

First I disconnected the remote cables from the ?? transom plate ?? and I found that the remote then shifted without issue. That seems to rule out the remote as the problem.

Next I tried to move the ?? transom plate assembly ?? by hand. This is the assembly where the remote cables meet the lower unit cables. This unit took some elbow grease to move. I could see that the engine cutoff switch seemed to be engaging correctly although the engine was off and there was no load on the prop. I did not get the impression that the plate itself was binding.

The advice on the forum seems to point to a rusted or corroded lower shift cable. Therefore, my intention is to drop the sterndrive, make a general inspection of the sterndrive and replace the lower shift cable, the shift cable bellow and the ?? exhaust ?? bellow -- to prevent water from entering the transom.

I have two questions:

1) When I purchase a lower shift cable, am I getting all the parts to the cable in one purchase or do I need to purchase individual parts separately? For example, some sites have the inner core, plus the outer cable, plus all the fittings, nuts, etc.

2) How can I be sure I am purchasing the correct shift cable for my sterndrive?

I see a number of sites that have lower shift cable replacement kits for the 165, but they all seem to require modifications to the installation, OR, seem to be multi-use or universal cables.

Can any seasoned mariners locate the correct OEM part number for my cable and/or point me in the right direction?

Thanks!!

Re: Trouble finding the correct lower shift cable

If your old cable is held in place with a nut on one side you're going to have to cut the threads in the pivot housing using a 3/8 straight pipe tap. The old style cables are no longer made. Just get a lower shift cable kit from mercruser it will have every thing you need,Sorry,I'm not at work and do not have the ### Good luck,Ted

Ayuh,... #1,.. Buy the complete Kit from Mercuiser, you'll get All the Parts that way....
#2,.. You need to Update to the Alpha 1 cable, the MC-1 cable is discontinued...

Re: Trouble finding the correct lower shift cable

if it hasnt been updated the bellhousing will have to be modified.
modification will require a 1\4 STRAIGHT pipe tap.
tap will be marked 1\4 NPS.
do not use a standard pipe tap it will destroy your bell housing.
tap from the fwd side of the bell housing using the existing thread as a guide.
do not attempt to tap from the aft end of the bellhousing.
then buy the cable kit from merc that fits all the alpha style drives.
would also be a good time to replace the drive bellows and check the gimbal bearing and ujoints.

Re: Trouble finding the correct lower shift cable

I was waiting for a response in my email box, but for some reason your replies were not getting through.

Thanks to all for the helpful guidance. We will be pulling off the sterndrive Sunday and once it is stable on our stand, we will begin the inspection.

Now I understand why I cannot find the old cables. I will be obtaining the kit from my Merc dealer and then update the drive for the new Alpha 1 setup.

Again, thanks for the follow up and I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

Now I see why everyone on boats is always waving at each other . . . they truly are a helpful and friendly bunch!
