Im replacing the belows, shift cable and the trim limit and trim sender, but ran into a problem, I have all but the exhaust bellows hooked up, but can't figure out how to get the exhaust one attached to the bell housing side, finally got the u joint attached, but no clue on how to get the exhaust re attached, I have the special tool to expand the bellow, and it worked well on the front side, but it seems the shift extension is in the way of reattaching the exhaust ones, do i need to remove the shift lever extension to get to the exhaust bellow.

And man this is a time consumming job to replace all these pieces, no wonder they charge an arm and a leg to do it at the marina. glad i did it myself and saved the few hundred they wanted.
Thanks
Shane

http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

the correct service mnaual would be best but this should help

you need to remove the shift shaft on a GEN II drive to use the tool

it would be a good time to change the upper shift seals they can also allow a leak into the drive

There should be a small hole in the transom housing on the left side just above the exaust, using a long thin screwdriver works.

since one end has been reattached, perhaps it has taken the oval shape. try turning the bellows around.

Re: trouble geting bellows all back on

Newbie, I attempted to replace the bellows according to the service manual's procedure. The procedure had me put the driveshaft bellow onto the transom plate and pull it onto the bell housing with a special tool. Since I did not have this tool (and couldn't fabricate one), I ended up putting the driveshaft bellows onto the bell housing and push it onto the transom plate from the inside of the bellows, using a dull tire iron. This worked fairly well since you can lean on the bell housing to compress the bellows.

if alpha gen one, grab it firmly in hand, squeeze it into oval shape and pull it on, while tilting the bell housing up as far as it will go. It would help to have an assistant to tighten up the clamp while you hold it in place.
