I am having trouble with my '98 VolvoPenta 5.0GL. Initially it cranks, sparks, revs to maybe 2000rpm, and then dies after about 2 seconds. After a few attempts (often giving it some gas), it will idle, and then it will run all day like a charm. But the next day, we go through the same process to get it going again. Sunday was the worst it's been - must have taken 30 minutes of trying to get it to idle. But once it does, it seems to run just fine. Any thoughts?

Choke not working, carb due a rebuild are 2 very probable causes.

Many thanks. I called two local mechanics, and both immediately suspected the fuel pump when I described the problem. One said the ethanol in our gasoline ruins these pumps, and they have to replace them routinely. Does this sound plausable, or perhaps a way to move spare parts?

If the boat runs fine after getting it going then I would not suspect a fuel pump.

Have you checked to make sure the choke is working correctly like has already been mentioned?

Describe your method of starting it.

Those pumps were designed to run ethanol fuels. What they don't like is air and water. Have you checked and changed your fuel filter lately. When you remove your water seperating fuel filter, dump it into a clear container and see if there is water in it. If there is more water than fuel, time to clean the tank.
Also check the fuel system for air leaks (hose clamps). There is a test for the boats fuel system in the Adults Only sticky, might want to have a look at it.
Corroded relay contacts could do the same thing with power to the relay.
Your mechanic just likes to sell $300 pumps, not $30 relays or $1 hose clamps.
