I have been having trouble with this for a few days now, please someone help.. i have an aq125 with a volvo 270 outdrive. i have worked on cars alot but never a boat so i don't know if their is something i dont know about these. I got my engine loose already but i can not get the shaft that is behind my flywheel to come off therefore my engine will not come out. I looked through it a little and through the manuals but neither manual tells me how they connect to eachother. i dont know if the shaft does slide out or not but if not do i have to take the upper housing of the outdrive apart and take the ujoint and everything out with it or should my shaft slide out before the ujoint? please someone help.. i need this engine out and im having too much trouble with it.

Got to pull the motor. Then the bellhousing comes off then the shaft comes out the front. If my memory is right there might be snap rings holding the bearings in place that hold the shaft in place.
Once it's out replace every bearing and seal. The shaft seals hold in grease and there might not be a grease fitting on the bellhousing, put one in!!!!
Grease this outfit often.J

The proper way to pull the engine is this.

Remove the upper gear housing. The ujoints will come out with this assembly. Look in the adults only thread under Volvo Info for help removing the upper.

Once the upper is off, you can access the six bolts behind it holding the engine and flywheel cover in place. To do this, you remove the six bolts, then, there are three holes in the ring that a couple of the bolts will thread into and while tightening those, it will cause the ring to push out and release the flywheel cover.

Keep in mind the engine should be supported at this time as your engine is mounted to the transum only I believe.

Why are you pulling the motor?

I am pulling the motor because i bought the boat with a bad motor and had a replacement sitting around.

I removed the six bolts, i got the engine and flywheel cover just hanging their but im guessing the shaft is suppose to release from the ujoints it looks like in the manual schematics but it doesn't want to release for nothing. I think it has just been in for so long it got rusted in there and doesn't want to pop out.

As I said, I have everything just hanging there and the upper housing for the drive is hanging there also, it just won't come apart.

Now one of you two said their might be a clip holding it in but i do not see any clips or cotter pins or anything of any sort in there.

What do I do?

The shaft is probably stuck in the ujoint yoke. rusted.

WD-40?

If youve got the engine hanging there you could unbolt at the bellhousing and remove the engine at the vibration damper.

That is the problem I am having. The shaft is definitely rusted in the yoke. i tried to unbolt the bellhousing (well on this boat i found out its called a flywheel cover not a bellhousing for some reason) but the bellhousing only slides off about a 1/2" because the ujoint is stopping it from sliding out so I can't get to the other side of the flywheel or the vibration damper. Any ideas on what else i can do? I have tried PB Oil and it did get rid of alot of the outside rust but the shaft is still stuck in there.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like you're saying that the shaft is rusted to both the u-joint yoke and to the vibration damper as well. Doesn't sound like a fun situation. I'd keep trying to loosen the u-joint yoke with penetrating oil and a large diameter rod as a persuader. You'll end up scratching the heck out of the gearcase if you're not careful.

It might be possible to remove the clips from the u-joints. You'll probably need to cut the bellows apart to do that but it sounds as though it needs to be replaced anyway.

Make sure you have the engine supported in some way.

Good luck and welcome to the world of #@*& old boats!

I think that all of us were under the impression that you had allready removed, or were trying to remove the upper gearbox with the u-joints. With it in place, I don't know how you were able to remove the bolts from the clamping ring.

I imagine you could remove the engine without pulling the gearbox but that sounds like a really painfull way of doing things.
