My 40 hp Bigfoot 4 stroke has an intermittent miss at WOT. Is there a way to test the ignition system components. Some times it cuts out every few seconds, other times it is a few times per minute and some times the problem is non-existent. I was wondering if there is a way to test with out specialized tools, I can get access to some basic meters and such used in the auto repair industry, just need to know what might work and how/where to hook it up.

As well as testing components check every bloody wire on the thing. I found many many broken wires on my 73 that would intermittently crap out.

I am not sure how your motor is set up but I have had some issues with mine. Using the Manual I tested the Stator, Solenoids and Trigger Assembly. I found a broke wire in the trigger assembly. You might want to purchase the repair manual and using a basic meter you can troubleshoot these areas.
