Trying to trouble shoot an issue that has developed with my lower unit, the past few trips out my lower unit sounds like it's slipping / banging in and out of gear. It has been doing this intermittently but when running at high rpms runs normal, seems to be happening when i 1st throttle up to make a run. I winterized the boat today and when i drained the lower unit oil it looked fine, no water or milky oil and minuscule metal shavings on the drain bolt. I read that it could possible be an adjustment in the linkage for the shifter? Any advice is much appreciated, would like to get this fixed before next season.

Thanks

shifter cable adjustment may be it. remove cable from cup slide the shifter bracket into full fowards and check the prop to see it locks in one direction and rachets in the other. set the cable with the trottle in forwards and see if the barrel on the cable is in line with the barrel cup. do the same for reverse set the slider into reverse making sure the prop fully locks in both directions. It may be turned a bit to get it in sinc to lock. If it ratchets it is not fully engaged. When set ful rev see that the barrel is in line with the barrel cup and insert it and lock it down. Re test to see if the problem is fixed. If not it,s possibly a worn shifter or worn cable to the engine. Or damaged LU

Mark your prop with a line from the spline out to the outer tube. Run it and inspect the line. If moved, get another hub or prop. Your hole shot is where the most thrust is required and the place where slip would be most evident. As it gets worse it will show up at WOT.

thanks for the advice I will look into the cable adjustment and see if that is my problem, hopefully that is it.

Thanks Texasmark if it is not the cable adjustment I will look into the hub, it makes sense that could be the issue as well. Hopefully it one of the issues mentioned above and not the lower unit, like I said that all looked normal when I changed the oil. Thanks again guys
