Good morning iboaters. On vaca so i am getting some serios restore/repair time in. First off 1983 Tiara 26, twin R drive mercruiser I/O w/oildyne round metal resevoir and two solenoids on each pump. It uses a Trim rocker switch momentary on-off-on momentary. One outdrive works fine. The one i am working on the trim up will not work (It has 2 more seperate tilt toggles on another panel, blue wire?). I jumped the solenoids to hot and the pump worked on both solenoids. I even removed the solenoid in question UP and replaced. Bench test looked a little wierd.it probably was not necessary.
I am now looking at the switch circuit. The toggle has 3 leads. Green on top, red middle and purple on the bottom lead. I can jump the red and green(which appears to be down) and pump works, I jump purple and red silence. I follow the flow chart in the merc troubleshooting manual. I have no voltage at point 8. So this says.
1. loose or corroded circuit connection
2. bad fuse. I dont see one except for the shared down/up one and the down works so thats not it.
3 bad trim switch. I jumped the purple red and the motor does not run. I even ohmd the switch out when flipped and it shorts just fine.

This puts me back to # 1. circuit issue.

Following the purple wire, looks like it goes into the trim limit switch then comes out wh/blue.

Questions.

1.Can the trim limit switch cause a no voltage to the pump? (isnt that what its there for)

2.I believe its normally closed. Could it be stuck open?

3.How do you test it and how can i bypass it for testing. I will replace if it is determined faulty. Dont see that in the manual.
Note: if this limit switch is a possibility i am surprised it is not mentioned in the flow chart.(or does it fall under curcuit)

Ayuh,.... #1,.. Yes...

#2,.. It's closed til it gets to it's limit, then opens the circuit...

#3,.. Look at the inside of the transom, find the bullet connections, 'n by-pass it...

They're notorious for failing, as the wires rot off, outside the transom...

Thank you Bondo, more info on the trouble. After reading some other posts on here about the same issue i discovered my Tilt, on the other panel works the up.

Follow up. Amazing, Thank you so much Bondo. I found the wires and the po idiot had disconnected them. I guess he was using the tilt/trailer toggle. I bypassed the open and the up and down worked. I ohmed out the wires going to the limit switches and they are both shorted (od is down). Which i think is good. I see some insulation worn off where it was rubbing against the steering rack (inside the hull)that i think i can fix but other than that they dont look that bad from what i can see. Sure hope i dont have to replace these things since i read i have to pull the bellhousing. I just got done putting it all together from an impeller refresh. Thank you so much again Bondo for your professional experience, you are great. Just goes to show you, on a used boat dont expect everything to be in its right place.

Dang Bondo, you called it dead on. When i went to heat shrink n butt splice the open in the limit switch wires the insulation crumbled in my hands. What did they make that out of cotton? I dont want to be ghetto and just use the trailer toggle. I have the round limit switches on both sides of the od. Does this model require the bellhousing to be pulled to replace? I see why the po cut them. Though i would have left the bullets on and taped them together.

Ayuh,... You can do as ya please,...
Personally, I know by my seat of the pants, 'bout where the drive is,....
So I don't need/ want the limit anyways, nor the gauge...
I by-passed mine at the transom, 'n the trim button does it all, from full down to full up...

Swappin' the sender/ switch is Easy,...
It's gettin' the wires through the transom....
