Re: trouble starting 470
OK dumb it is LOL. In order to get a high voltage spark, low voltage is sent to the coil, which is a transformer. The transformer transforms low voltage high amperage electrical current from the battery to high voltage low amperage current that is fed to the spark plugs. Here is where your problem lies. When you start your boat you need the strongest spark to get it going, because it is cold, and it is turning over slowly, so you need to apply a full 12 volts to the coil. When it is running it needs less voltage at the coil to make the spark, so you want to reduce the voltage (and current) to the coil to keep it from getting too hot. So this is what they do, and where I am guessing your problem is: When you turn the key to start a solenoid (electrical switch) on the side of your engine does two things, it sends current to the starter solenoid and it sends full battery voltage to your coil + (purple/yellow wire). As soon as your engine starts and you return the key to run, the solenoid opens and that voltage stops, but with the key on voltage goes from the ignition switch to the choke on the carburetor and to a connector with a purple wire that goes to the coil +. This wire is the resistor wire that reduces the 12 volts from the battery to about 8 volts or so while you are running. So to your problem, when the starter cranks you are getting voltage to the coil, and when you return the key to run you are not, bad connection, or wire. Anyway that is what I think LOL. Good luck.
