Trouble starting after winterization?

I am trying to start up my 65 hp 1972 evinrude after winterization. This is my first year with a boat. I know the choke solenoid plunger is disconnected but it started fine last fall without it. Anyway, the issue I am having is that it will start like a monster for about three seconds after I add some starter fluid to the carbs but then dies. Like I said, this is my first time doing this. Do I need to just keep starting it with starter fluid until the fresh gas works its way through and the fogging oil is cleaned out? Or should it have stayed started the first go around?

The worst thing is to continue using starter fluid. It washes all the oil off inside and can lead to damage. Squirt a little pre-mix in through the carbs and pump the bulb until it's hard and give it a try.

Will do. Somebody told me to add some pre mix behind the spark plugs also.... Would you recommend this?

Through the carbs or in the plug holes, but just a little or it will flood. If you do the plugs, clean any excess oil off of them

You really should fix the choke. The symptoms you describe also fit clogged carb idle jets. If you have that, the motor could be damaged if you continue to run it. If the choke is working, and the motor still stalls, a clogged carb is very likely.

It started after about the 20th try. Thanks for the help. I doubt the carbs are clogged since they were rebuilt last year.

Improper winterisation can cause this too

Ethanol will cause havoc on fuel related parts you can not assume because you cleaned them last year there is not s problem in the carb.
When's the last time you changed your fuel lines? The older fuel line and ethanol is a bad combo the fuel line turns to mush from the inside and all that debris goes right into the carb then sits and turns to sludge.

I always store my rig with a full tank of fesh high octane gas & fuel stabilizer. I then run the engine 30 minutes to circulate the stabilized fuel and then top off the tank before storing 6 months of winter

never had "water in gas" issues, yellow gel muck in the gas or start up issues.

p.s. in the Spring I dump half the gas for the lawn tractor needs and I refill the boat with fresh gas.
