Sorry so long, I wanted to include all info.

I have a 1995 115hp Yamaha that I had trouble with bogging down at high speeds. I rebuilt carbs and the engine fired right off and ran great at all speeds for a couple of trips out and then went back to bogging. So I cleaned carbs again thinking they clogged again and that was the case. It ran good again after second cleaning. So I put in a water/fuel separator filter. Now the engine runs great once I get it started but I takes a good bit of turning over to get it started. So much that it comes close to draining my battery. I took it out this past weekend and had the same problem. It took a while to get it started but once it started it ran great. I shut the engine down and then started it again immediatly and it fired right up. So I killed it and started fishing. After fishing for about two hours I tried to move to a new location and I had the same trouble starting the engine again. Before installing the filter, I barely would turn the key in this same situation and the engine would fire right up.

Well finally to my question. Does it sound like I am flooding the carb or does is sound like the carb is not getting enough gas?

I do pump on my bulb until it is good and hard and I give it about 1/4 throttle (in neutral) and pull the choke when I am first starting for the day. But I used to be able to just turn the key for the rest of that day no matter how long it sat while I was fishing. Now I have to do that start up procedure everytime I start it if it sat for longer than a 1/2 hour.

I have good tight clamps on my new filter so I don't think air is getting in at the new filter. Does it take a while to get the air out of the line after installing the filter or was I supposed to bleed the line when I installed it. If I was supposed to bleed it how should I go about doing that?

Re: Trouble starting Yami

Start by pulling the battery out and charging it overnight. I have the same motor and it needs a topped off battery with clean connections to really wake it up. See if that helps and report back.
When you cleaned the carbs how many turns did you turn out the pilot jet screws?
Nice fresh plugs gapped correctly?

Thanks for your reply.

I had charged the battery completely the night before and the battery is only 3 months old.

I backed out the pilot screws 1 3/8 turns. However the tip of one of the pilot jets is smashed. It has been this way since I got the motor and it has started ok in the past. I don't really know what is in there. I assume that a previous owner broke off the tip of the pilot screw in there and then screwed a new one in on top of it. I have been afraid to try to drill it out or something and cause even more damage. I really don't know what to do about it short of replacing the top part of the caruretor. I tried sticking a sewing needle into the tiny hole in the top of that barrel to work the obstruction loose but this didn't work. As I said before though, this as been this way for the three years that I have owned this motor. Any suggestions?

Plugs are about a year old and I regapped them about 4 months ago. They looked good when I checked them at that time.

Bluebird,
You said clean terminals. Have you ever replaced the entire cables from your battery to the motor and if so did you see any difference in the starting. I just checked and my positive terminal is a little green with corrosion. I will try to clean it and see if it makes a difference.

My question about the cables comes from a problem I had on a Ford Mustang I once had. The wires themseves were corroded all the way through. Replacing the cables on my boat would not be an easy job because the battery is in my center console and the wires go under the deck (where I cannot get to them) all the way to the motor.

Geez that problem with the pilot jet yikes. The screw should be replaced and who knows whats going on under it. After my last carb rebuild I had to back out all four screws 3 turns then Iput it in the water warmed it up. Idling in gear I brought them back 1/2 turn at a time until it coughed and quit then back out a quarter turn. Now they are at 2 1/4 and it starts on a bump from the starter when its warm and idles at 800/700 in gear.
Corrosion in the battery cables is problematic and should be corrected.
