hey guys, I have a 1987 cobalt with a volvo duoprop drive. the factory square, tacky looking, trim gauge stopped working last season and i ordered an analog trim gauge. well upon removal of old gauge i see the factory setup has an 8 pin square connector into the back of the gauge. the analog gauge has 4 posts. has anyone ever done this type of conversion? is it even possible with the goofey sending unit setup volvo uses to measure trim? any help would be appreciated. thank you

welcome aboard

you would get a better response had you posted this in the volvo section.

do a search on here. Don S posted the wiring diagram of the volvo trim gague. your old gauge has a relay and over-ride switch your new gauge doesnt.

nothing goofy about how volvo operates the trim gauge. its a potentiometer on a gear that is rotated by the segment on the helmet. the potentiometer is inside the nice and dry boat, with the wires protected. where a mercury potentiometer unit is sitting under water on the side of the outdrive.

you will loose the trim stop functionality, so you will have to be vigilant in watching your gauges because you can raise the drive too much. the square gauge has the electronics in side to stop raising (requiring the over-ride switch) where your new gauge does not.

download the manual for the schematic (page 169) since I could not post the pic of the page

what is wrong with your existing gauge?

existing gauge is completely inop. has good power and grounds. will not power on, nothing on the display at all. its been fading in and out for a few years now and is finally gone. plus the new gauge looks about 100x better than a square gauge mashed into a round hole as per the factory setup.
