I have a 1990 90hp evinrude, the oil side of the vro was disconnected before I got it.
Last summer the motor didn't seem to want to idle on times and would idle for a bit then die. A lot of the time, when you'd try to put it in gear it would die. Other than that, it started and ran great when on the throttle.
Then toward the end of the season it started to get worse, wouldn't idle as well ,which wasn't great to begin with. Then, sometimes when I'd put it in gear and start moving, the engine would "bog" and wouldn't throttle up to full RPMs. The boat wouldn't reach top speed, it would get up to 15 or 20mph and stay there for perhaps a minute or two, then all of a sudden it would accelerate up to 40 mph fine and sound great.
At first I tried the simplest of things and replaced all the plugs, no difference. Then I cleaned the carbs, still no difference.
I had figured maybe the fuel pump was getting weak and bought a rebuild kit a couple months ago. Of course, the boat was sitting in storage until now, and I just found out it was not the proper rebuild kit for the pump. They gave me a kit for the old 88 type pump. I probably won't be able to get the proper kit for a few weeks.
So....While waiting on the correct fuel pump rebuild kit I plan on replacing all the fuel lines in case there's a leak there somewhere. Other than that what else could cause this? Do you even think I need to rebuild the pump or is there another gremlin in there causing the trouble?
Thanks for your time.
