trouble with new motor

Yamaha 50hp, less than 10 hrs. Took it to the lake this morning, had to choke it to start. Lots, LOTS of smoke then it cut off. After that, it won't even crank.
Fresh fuel, stabil, topped off the oil. No clue. New boat owner- very frustrated. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow... for the 5th time!

that motor has not had a choke in some years.
it does have a manual enrichment function for emergency use.
that motor is a prime start model and all it requires of the operator is to turn the key, as long as the system works and the techs working on it actually understand it.
look on your dealers wall for at least fuel system certification and electrical certification.
if theye are not there change dealers.

Ditto... No choke on those motors. They have what they call either a "starter assembly" in some of the parts books or a "thermoelectric valve" in the service manuals. It is not a choking system but rather an automatic enrichening system. It usually sits on the middle carb and you'll know it because it has 2 wires going to it. A black ground and a blue hot. After you get the engine running put your fingers on the rubber boot and see if you can feel it getting warm/hot to the touch, because it should be.

Thanks for the response. Right, it's called an "emergency starter valve". A guy at the lake showed me how to use it. He's a boat mechanic. With less than 10 hrs on it, I shouldn't have to use it, right???
It's happened the last 3 times I've been out. Just this time, the smoke and then it shut off and wouldn't even turn over again.
This starter valve looks like a red plastic thing. I've had a hard time with the dealer so far, so tomorrow should be interesting to say the least.
I've followed the manual for the break in period just like the manual said to. I've even gone out specifically just to break in the motor.

Just to clarify. You leave the throttle in the idle position until it starts.
