I have been trying to put my g/c back on. Its on a 85 115. Everything goes on smooth, I hook up the shifting linkage, try to shift into gear and it won't move. I have taken the g/c off 3 times and made sure rod height is good. It moves fine off of p/h. I just put a new rubber gasket on shift rod w/ a new water pump rebuild kit. Before I put the new gasket on everything was fine. What do you think??

Have you got the shift rod pointed in the right direction ? Is the shift rod height correct ?

Re: Trouble with shifting rod???

Yes the height is correct as per my manual. About 21 13/16. With it in neutral. Also yes it is pointed toward front of boat. I have hooked it up 3 times previous in the last week with no problems. I'm wondering if somehow I could have bent it. I tried unhooking the cable and shifting it manually, but it still won't move.

Dumb question I know but are you turning the prop as you try to shift?

Yes I've tried tried everything to get it to move. Once I take it off off the P/h it is smooth as can be. Once its hooked up it won't move. Unless I am somehow shifting it into reverse as I am installing it, and that is throwing it off, but I don't see how that is possible either.

That linkage is tricky with regard to the Leaver arm up to. Ru sure nothing binding there and all is lubed properly?

Have you tried to shift with the motor running? Or have you just tried to shift it manually with the motor off?

No I haven't fired it up. The throttle shifter won't come out of gear. I can't even move it to neutral, so I know it won't start in gear.. I unhooked the cable and tried to shift it manually and the linkage won't budge. I guess I will take it off again in the morning and try to see what is going on. Im going to put on the old shifting rod gasket first to see if that solves it. Fingers Crossed!!!!

I was under the impression that outboards will start in forward(low throttle, of course), but maybe I'm mistaken. I know both of my motors will start in forward cause I've done it.

Are you trying to install the gearcase with cables still attached to engine???
Disconnect at least shift cable from engine before doing this.
Try shifting by hand at engine when installed.
If ok, adjust trunnion on shift cable!!

The shifting cable off when I assembled it. Then I hooked it up to see if I could gently move it w/ the remote. Do you think I could have bent the rod? What gear should I be putting back on in. I have been using N.

Re: Trouble with shifting rod???

Does not matter which gear it is in.
When having the gearcase installed and BEFORE putting the screw back through the vertical rod, are you able to lift the shift-rod up or down with just putting a small screwdriver through the hole in the rod?

No, it will not move. So what do you think could be wrong?

Re: Trouble with shifting rod???

Next time you remove that lower unit, observe the shift rod closely and turn it to see if it's bent. If that rod is the same rod that came with the 2nd unit, in all probability it is bent. This would make it bind on the brass shift bushing in the top portion of the lower unit shift housing. What condition is your old unit's shift rod in? That rod must be perfectly straight.
