I have a 70 Starcraft I just purchased that has some issues with the tilt/trim controls
Well this is what I've found so far. The switches can be completely disassembled and cleaned. Basically they are a copper cup and two copper contacts. unfortunately copper oxidizes so I cleaned everything with emery cloth and applied a thin film of dielectric grease.

bad wiring on Holiday.jpg

This is two wires I found (green and purple) that go the limit switch(es) on the outdrive I think. The insulation on them was completely rotted, probably all the way from the coupler terminals to the switch itself for all I know.
Do these two wires go to one limit switch or two? neither of these two wire are grounded out so I guessed that they might complete a circuit and tied the two together and now when I press the middle button I can raise the outdrive all the way up.
The top (Up) button still does nothing so I'll have to do more research on that.
The Bottom (In) button doesn't do anything either. I thought it was working but all it does is make noise. I can hear the pump running but no movement on the outdrive??? What's up with that? I did add about 2/3 of a quart of oil to the pump reservoir after tightening down a pressure line on the bottom back of the pump.

Any ideas?

By tieing the two wires toghether you just bypassed the trim limit switch (located on the port side of your outdrive covering the hinge pin).
The center "up" is for trim and won't do anything if the outdrive is more than a third of the way up, the top is "trailer up" and is used with the center button.
The bottom obviously is down and if it just makes noise then there must something jamed or an air lock or something in the system???

I did explain to you how the trim electrics worked and what the buttons did.... remember? (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=549469&p=3772205&viewfull=1#post3772205) and the top button will do nothing anyway... It's the panel version of the limit switch closing... I'll attach a wiring drawing for you....

As for the drive not going down... have someone stand on the drive while you press the IN button.... It is likely the end caps have corroded internally and they are grabbing the piston rod and not allowing it to move....

I also have a pdf of the owners handbook... Unfortunately it's 26Mb, so I'll have to email it to you... PM me with your email address...

I suspected that was what I was doing. The outdrive bled down and the skeg was on the ground and I still had no "up" so I was trying to see if the trailer up would even work. Which it did.

The oil reservoir on the pump was just about empty so it's possible it has air in the system. I'll have to try to bleed the system tomorrow.
