Friends, i posted on another thread earlier today. To recap - took 1972 Johnson to mechanic who did pressure check. Redid carbs, coil, cables, etc. Motor fires up and runs well at half throttle but dies if we go up or back on throttle. Ran poorly so we took it back. Cable had snapped and was supposedly fixed. Took boat out yesterday and same issue with throttle. At this time I want to try a few obvious things before we haul the boat back to this mechanic.

How important is it that the priming bulb be in an upright vertical position? Ours is horizontal. I noticed a very frayed wire but dont know what it is. See photo. I talked to an old mechanic that my Dad used years ago and he said to try some 2+1 additive. We were told when we picked boat up the 1st time that theyd put non ethanol gas in the new tank. I appreciate any and all suggestions. Sorry photo size is too large.

The primer bulb works best in a vertical position. Also, take it to another mechanic.

Once the motor is primed and started, the primer bulb makes no difference. You could completely remove it and it would still run.

Thanks guys! I tested a little of the gas this evening at the suggestion of "the old guy" my Dad used for years for his boats and the gas, in fact, is ethanol. Who knows how old it might be. I will be trying the 2+1 this weekend. Cross your fingers for me!

If the additive doesn't help I'm going to consider bad fuel pump. Wouldn't a decent mechanic check/replace this if he were overhauling a motor?

Ethanol is not likely the issue. Post a model number, and describe the broken cable a little more. (Older style remote cables used set screws, which could work loose.)

Im not so much worried about ethanol - my brother has used fuel with ethanol in his boats for years. I am questioning the freshness of the fuel and whether or not something might be gummed up.
