Ok we picked boat up Sat. - ths is the 4th trip. Guy said the choke was stuck. They put it on lake and fixed it. We hd it out for a few hours - it ran dexent but not as much power as I expected. Docked the boat overnight. This morning it fired up but died everytime we out it into gear. I took the shroud off only to find the choke spring replaced with paracord! Seriously?!?! At this point I will not tae the boat back. I have access to old Johnson parts. Can I fix this myself?

I don't know why not. You didn't say what model, but I just grabbed 65hp at random. Spring is part #314193. Retained to the lever by a tiny o-ring #307529

50hp spring is #316075. Same 307529 o-ring. The loop on the end of the springs slips onto a post on choke lever. O-riing keeps it from falling off.

Stator needs replaced? Maybe it does, maybe not. Can't tell from here. Do you have confidence in the guy knowing what he is doing?

I assume you meant coils of stator...if so it needs rectifier tested...

Heres what he is telling me - Good morning. I'm going to try to explain. These are photos of the stator on your motor. It is located under the flywheel and not exposed unless flywheel is removed. Specifically, the photos are of the spark pick up that sends spark to the plugs. They are both, cracked and melted as you can see.

Now... on a boat motor... as the engine is run and they heat up with operation, the heat causes them to fail even further. In other words, when cold, they will operate better or even as they should.... but fail when heated after run for a while.

So when run here on a water hose. The engines cold. When run for an avg 15-20 min test run. The engines just barely warm and may not cause them to fail either. The only way to detect this problem is when out on the boat for hours, or remove the flywheel. Which there's no reason to unless such applicable symptoms arise.... which they did this time with your explanation of it running for about 3 hours the first day.

I am hesitent to put more money into the motor and I am losing faith in this place. He's telling me this isnt something they could have known early on.

My gripe has been that the shop owner quoted me a price to get motor running like new. We are now on 4+ trips and each time its something else. At this point I am thinking we will cut our losses abd sell boat in the spring.

When we first took boat to this place we had a newer Mercury that ended up being crap. He asked if we wanted to have the older Johnson checked. Told us it was worth repairing - $777.00. Water pump, coil, cables, etc.
