Hi Hello All,

I am new to this forum, so let me Introduce myself. My name is Mike, I own a 1983 Galaxie 18.5' v6 OMC. I live in Las Vegas, and I Boat localy here at lake mead and sometimes on the river. I have owned this boat for about 7 months now and taken it out to the lake a couple times. Mind you this is my first boat and i KNOW NOTHING about the sport.

Last time i went out, i was unstraping my wakeboard while by buddy was driving, and he hit a rock.

It bent the aluminum propeller, and then some other items broke once we tried to get it back to the dock. Basically, there was a loud cracking type noise, and then a power loss, the motor still runs.

When put into gear, it used to make a sudden jerk and then the ball gears would grab, know once put into gear it just revs the engine.

What i am getting to is, where do i start to diagnose the problem. What tips and tricks can i do to make sure i buy the right part and replace it.

I called around localy and some dude told me he knew exactly what it was, an engine coupler, and he could do the entire install for just short of 1200 bucks..... thats almost what i paid for the boat originally.

Here are some Photos

Like i said, it used to jerk when put into gear, know it doesnt jerk at all.

Thanks for your help in advance, and im sorry if there is already some info on this, i attempted to do a search and didnt find that much.

Thanks again,

Yup, sounds like a coupler. However, if you're lucky, it could be just a spun prop. What happens when you have the boat on the trailer, motor off, but in gear? Can you spin the prop? What noises do you hear?

Ball gears don't grab when you put it in gear they are always ingauged
when in the down position also in the tilt positon but very little surface contact. Don't run it in this position you will eat up the ball gears quickly.
You might have sheared a water pump spline that dtives the lower unit.
Just a thought, I am no expert.

Re: Troubleshooting Ideas

I have had the boat winterized and parked in storage since my last post. I have finally retrieved my vessel and I intend on getting it back into operational order. here is an updated picture of the boat on its homecoming. Ive done the prop test and it does not spin. I am more than likely looking at having to replace the engine coupler. I will document this process with photos and update a thread as i go along. Thank you all! This site is truly a place for enthusiasts to come together!
