Trying to get this 12v trolling motor (front mount 12/24 plug) wired and working on a 16ft bass boat. I am trying to isolate the motor to one 12v battery. PO had it wired incorrectly at the battery and it was disconnected, he says the motor works but who knows? The boat has four wires at the battery and four wires factory wired to the plug receptacle up front.

-Red
-Red/blue
-Black
-Black/blue

Battery is a new 12v and tests @ 12.6volts.

1. Can a 12v trolling motor run on a single 12v battery?
2. It should be as simple as 2 wires: pos batt (w circuit breaker) to the plug --- and a black wire neg to plug?!?

When doing this, it pops the breaker and I'm getting a neg 12v reading on my meter. I've tried various 2-3 and all four wire combinations and all the same results.

Ideas?

Yes, a 12V trolling motor can run on one battery.
Seems to me red & black would be one battery and red/blue & black/blue would be second battery.
Look at the configuration of the plug for the motor and figure out if it's red & black or red/blue & black/blue.

Red and black from battery to receptacle. Plug must have red and black wires on same terminals as the receptacle. If there is a jumper strap in the plug remove it. Plug is typically labeled a+, a- for battery #1. B+ and B- for battery #2. Those are not used but can remain in place.
