Hello fellow IBoaters,
How is everyone today. We'll I just found me a Great!!! deal this past weekend from Craigslist on a Troybilt, 4 horsepower Tecumseh garden tiller, model# 15006, Tecumseh engine model# HS40 55580M (C), Anyway I have two questions about it. Here are my two questions below.

1. I am rebuilding my carburetor and want to know if I can set the float the same as a Johnson/Evinrude outboard, set it level with the carb turned upside down? Also, anything I need to know about the carb rebuild? I also brought a basic carb kit for it that should be here tomorrow, Friday or Saturday. A side note this carb had alot of reddish color crud/varnish inside of it so I am thinking that is why it would run on full choke and not when the choke valve was repositioned to unchoked side then it would shut off on me.

2. I just noticed after I brought it that the right rear tiller/tines shaft is very loose and is leaking oil from it pretty good. I think the tine shaft seal is bad but will that shaft/tine seal cause the right rear axle to be loose or is it the bearing?

Thank you for your time and outstanding advice you have given me in the past to save me money.

Re: Troybilt-4 horsepower Tecumseh-Tiller

dolluper,
Thank you. I will go ahead and replace both bearing and shaft tiller/tine seal since the right side shaft is extremely loose as a goose. I believe this will be a Great!!!! running garden tiller becuase it runs ok at full choke and sounds powerful but shuts off pretty quickly when the choke is manually positioned to unchoked position. I will work the carb rebuild and get it running before I tear into the leaking tiller tines on the rear side. My wife is wanting to get our garden up and ready for the garden season so I got to get it going so I can make her happy. One more thing is it a bear to get the rear tiller/tine shaft and bearing off?

One more thing/question. After I replace the tiller/tine shaft bearing and seal I will have to service the transmission up again. I think using 80/90 rear end gear weight oil be ok to use and how I service it is remove the side square plug and remove the plastic fill cap and fill it to it comes out the side square plug on level ground. Is that correct?

Ifin you have the model # of the troy it's easier to say....online manuals are available for free....your going to lose some fuild in the seal replace as to weight or type ....best to use manual rather than a guess or call a dealer they will tell you .....pulling apart can be smooth or difficult depends on the other owner if he maintained or not.....hard to say anything really without seeing it you know....basic stuff sure
Doh hardly read your post model # sped over it
here's your manual click get this manual its free Pdf file.... further down page is parts manual also free http://lawnandgarden.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/troybilt/15009.html

Dolluper,
Thank you this is a Great!!! manual I just read through it but learned alot. I am a little worried about the tine shaft. It is pretty loose on the right rear side so hoping it is only a bearing and the tine shaft is not broken on me.

If the tines on both sides turn at the same time the shaft is good. If I remember correctly, the gearcase is set up similar to a lower unit, a pinion gear to a driven gear on the tine shaft.

Re: Troybilt-4 horsepower Tecumseh-Tiller

-----Update---- on my, new to me, Troybilt Tiller, I am so excited when things go good on getting something that has sat around for a while running again, but anyway I received my Carb rebuild kit in the mail today for my tiller machine and put it in after cleaning my carb really critically good. At first, I got a little bothered when a slight ooze of gasoline came out of the float bowl and I thought it was a gasket thing and then I figured out that there was a tiny, couple of pin holes, that I didn't see right off the start but they were there and I had to go and purchase a brand new aluminum float bowl. Anyway, once I figured that out and installed it and reset my low speed and high speed initial settings then I cranked her over and boy was I a happy camper, hearing that thing roar to life. So now the engine is running Great!!! at both high speed and kow spped settings as well as I figured out that the shutoff kill switch had to be adjusted to shut the machine off at the throttle controls but now she is running good and shutting off like it is supposed to know. Today I did order my tiller/tine shaft seals and those will not be in until Monday so I will have to wait to get the seals replaced before I can start to till up our ground for our garden. Yes, the shaft is fine and is not broken as I thought it was. After looking at the tiller/tine shaft I figured out that the tiller section not the shaft has play in it so today, this afternoon I ordered two tiller/tine shaft seals and they will not be here until this upcomming Monday afternoon. So to recap, my engine is running remarkable after the extensive carb cleaning/rebuild and I have to wait to swap out the tiller/tine shaft seals once they come in Monday afternoon. I did manage to remove the tiller/tines on both sides of the machine today to verify that the shaft has zero play in it and discovered that the left side has the five bolts that hold the tines/tillers shaft seals together. Anyway, I am progressing on getting a really good tiller going at a steal of a price versus buying brand new.

Dolluper,
Yeap, I have been trying to figure out the quickest and fastest way to remove and install the new tiller/tine shaft seals. I have did some research and found out that you can install two sheet metal screws, opposite of each other, on the outer metal sides of the old seal and take a pry bar and put under the heads of the screw and work the old shaft/tine seal out and after it is out clean up the shaft with fine grit sandpaper and carb cleaner and then put grease on the entire shaft and the new seal as well as rtv sealant on the outer metal part of the new seal and use a 1 1/2 inch pipe to drive the new seal in place and walla it is down. What do you guys think?
