Trying to get pics of the boat up after using on local lake this weekend. Don't have the sticker yet and I'm going to have to have the guy I got the motor from take it back. I ran it for 15 min. It shut off and now rope won't pull, but it was a blast while working!

Congrats, nice set up. Is that a sib with small speed tubes on lower ones, is it a short or long shaft transom, which size and HP engine are you currently using ?

That's a nice cat that you have. Btw, Was the motor in gear when you tried to start it?, and was the lanyard on correctly? It will only start in neutral. Not poking fun , but those are common problems and I really want this motor to work for you so we can see a running cat

Lol... Nope, it was in neutral and this was before the lanyards. Unfortunately my motor guy is in Ohio until next week but I'm loaded with work for the next 10 days. It is short shaft. I think I'm going to trade up to a bigger motor though. Boats to go says 9.9hp max but the plate on transom says 30! I'm thinking about a 15 BC I have to handle this thing every time I go out

if your latch is not locked in the down position or in any other position it will not let you pull the cord in any gear

if it ran in front of you and now you cannot pull the cord means it is not seized. As Ronald said, it is a common problem. Put into nuetral then make sure its locked down or up which ever way you want to start it then it will let you pull. You can also verify this if it will not let you turn the prop in any gear

Sea rider, not exactly clear on your question about the tubes... They are 20" diameter. 7.5 HP motor but I was not able to get on a plane.

if it did not plane then you may have had it in shallow drive. my old 6hp with long shaft planed my boat

I had that problem yesterday when I took Sinistre to the upper Chesapeake. Boy was I mad. I forgot that I put it in shallow drive last week when we were in the Potomac. I had to download the manual last night to undo the mess I made

You can bet money that the 30 they referenced was 2 stroke. A 15 hp 4 stroke weighs in at about 110lbs give or take 5 pounds. There is nothing portable about a 30hp 4 stroke

Interesting.... I'll try when I get off with in about an hour... And what is shallow drive? Never heard of it

Back to the question re: locked up. Shock absorber busted in the lower unit?

@RonaldJ, Glad you figured out the shallow water drive thing. I could tell something was not adjusted quite right but not sure what... and I am reluctant to play around with another persons new motor!! Lol

when you lift the outboard there are different positions aka trim. This is designed to get optimal performance from the outboard (each boat and transom is made differently and that is why the outboard has different positions). Shallow drive is 1 position from complete lift out of the water. This position is made to setup for launch or for return to dock and not damage the prop/skeg. When outboard is not completely locked into either of the position the driveshaft locks up as a precaution and does not let engine turn over. If you need more info on that outboard visit http://www.leeroysramblings.com/johnson_QD.htm

So.... Got home, played around with the gear shifter and verified it was in neutral, the tilt mech was locked... No luck. Took the recoil assembly off and tried turning the flywheel by hand, it was really really tough but it finally broke loose. Put the recoil back on and now it will pull and I can hear the compression inside. I don't have a barrel that I can run it in but thinking of building a mount that I can run it over a trash can with. Gonna try to go back to the lake wed morning and will try again. If nothing else I'll run a lap with the minn kota

Damn! I was running 50:1, I just researched and I should be running 20:1! That may explain some things

i still do not like that your crank is getting stuck. If it happens again, take off the lower unit and try to turn the prop to rule out the lu giving you the issue and not the powerhead.

Invest in a Home Depot bucket. It works great for a water source especially since you have to flush your motor after salt water use. You could actually use a saw horse or a hand truck as a motor stand and place the bucket under it

Hi, was asking if you have speed tubes under big ones, most Cats have them, unless being a much simple new model. Have you fully checked transom's tech plate specs. Max HP and size S, L ? A 7.5 is just good for fast displacement speeds, near mission impossibel to plane, lacks power to get out of the hole.

If engine runs 20:1 run it that way. 50:1 is too poor on oil for that probably old model. Expect to smoke worst than a indian tribe....

Happy Boating
