I bought a 1988 Sunbird with a 3.0l omc sterndrive engine that I am working on. The starter was rusted out and upon removing it I found out it was a starter for a car and not the origional starter. I have the engine model number as 302AMRGDP. When I search for the starter for this engine I get different starters and am trying out which one is the original so I can replace it....can anyone help point me in the right direction

If you have a shop near you that repairs starters and alternators, you can bring your starter by there and ask for a marine starter that looks just like it, except it is made for boats.

You can Google your way to a marine starter for that engine . . . It seems that a Sierra #18-5919 or an ARCO #30460 are the OEM replacements.

your original starter was 35# of direct drive junk

get a new PMGR starter which is about 15# and will turn your motor over faster
