Trying to get 85hp 1975 engine running.

Trying to get my engine running after changing the water pump. The engine hasent been run for awhile.
I managed to get it to turn over. But it stalls. What concerns me is the sound it makes at the :17 second mark. Kinda like it's on, but something isn't engaging. Just a spinning sound.

First try was pretty promising, then each try after it got worse and worse. Could be that you're flooding it. Have you checked to make sure the carbs aren't leaking fuel? Look at the carbs while priming the bulb.
Could be many things... prime starter, spark, fuel, etc. But given that it tried to start and then gave up trying, I'd assume flooding and go from there. If it tries to start again the next day after the fuel had time to evaporate away, then you likely flooded it. You can do this same test (try starting it a few times, same as in the video) each day to see if the first try is the most promising. If you can narrow it down to a flooding motor, it's easy to track it down from there.
Also, make sure the starter is correctly engaging the flywheel. Could be what that spinning sound was.

Ya. I figured it may be flooded too. Going to try again tomorrow nite and see what happens.

How old is the gas? Water in tank?

It had a 1/2 tank of gas in it when I got the boat. I added another 1/4 tank of fresh to it.

Got it running today. Not sure if this made any difference at all, but I lowered the motor all the way down. I had it up a little before.
Also cleaned the fuel line from the primer bulb to the engine hook up. And added octane booster to the fuel. The fuel was old, but I added 10L of new and the booster. Works pretty good now. Going to run it again tomorrow to see how it goes. then to test it in water!
