I have a 1990 Johnson VRO 140. Been trying to get it started since i got it back from the mechanic. Can't seem to find anything I did differnt;y exceot he used his kill switch and I don't have one. He said I need to get one after I got i back. But I thought that I could just find a way to hold the button down. Anyway he said is has good compresion 125,125,125,130. He said it was runnin fine and i had him disconnect the vro so I can run premix. I can't get the **** thin gto start have prime and primed but won't start. I called him and he said the only thing that he could think of was me not having a kill switch. I have pressed it down though when I try to start it and it just cranks but no fire although smoke does come out the exhuast. I also noticed gas coming out behind the prop?? Normal? Water came out to but my mecahnic said that was normal as well. I have checked fuel lines and the bulb does get hard before starting. I am thinking about disconnecting the kill swith. I have a solid black and 2 black with a yellow stripe going into it. I hard is I cut those then I won't have to worry about it any suggestions. It was running well when he had now I can't get it to work. Oh after i got mad I tilted it back up and gas was coming out of some hle it looks like toward the middle of teh engine before the carb was that just from the angle?? Sorry for being so long.

Get someone to press the Lanyard switch while you check for spark...that should put an end to the guessing if its the stop switch (lanyard)

TMD

Marine Doc.. I held the switch down, and pulled a plug cap off, look inside no spark.. I am guessing its the swithc, how do I dissconnect? Which wires the all three, or just the black and yellow striped ones?

I'm somewhat new to boating, but not wrench spinning, and thats not how you check for spark. Put a plug in the cap and hold it against ground, see if there is a spark jumping.

AF....not understanding a couple things in your post....

The mech said he used his "kill switch". Did he hook up another control? I use one at my shop so I don't have to keep running back an forth to the front of the boat.

I don't think you want to do away with the safety switch, if that's what we are talking about. That's the button you put the the "key" on to keep it depressed. Are we on the same page here?

If so, do as nitsuj suggests and keep the spark plug in the spark plug boot. Ground the plug and have someone crank the engine. If there is no spark, try another plug from the opposite bank. If there is no spark there, chances are that the safety switch could be bad....but the ignition switch could also be at fault. If you want to trouble shoot this engine your self, by all means, get a service manual for your engine. They have wiring diagrams and will show you how to test the engines ignition system. Or...take it back to the mech. My opinion...he should have corrected the fault in the first place.

Yes we are on the same page. I think he meant that he had the part that snaps on it. I don't have that part i just have the button sitting there where i would have to hold it myslef. That is why I wanted to disconnect it so I won't have to. I think I need to cut the yellow and blac wires. Anyway I will check for spark. But I am not sure how sensative those buttons are. I mean I am pushing it down but he said " I might not be getting full contact with out the top part. I mean that is all I can think of if it was running last weekend. I will check for spark.

AF...the clip that goes on that safety switch pushes the button pretty far down, it almost countersinks the button, if you are just using your finger you may not be pushing it in all the way. Try using a small screwdriver or punch or just by the clip they are not too expensive. If you don't have it pushed all the way in you won't get any spark so there won't be anything to check for. If your mechanic had it running in front of you I doubt the safety switch is bad, you said he was using the clip on it so that may be all you need. You have to start with the easy fixes first before you get in too deep.
